Since the election of the late Dr. Song, Ho Seong as the first chairman of the academy, the academic meeting, previously hosted by the Korean Tuberculosis Association, has been hosted by the academy from the Autumn Academic Meeting in 1962.

The first academic meeting under the name of the Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases was held at Yonsei University School of Medicine in December 1, 1962, where 20 lectures and case discussions were presented including “The preventive chemical therapy among children in contact with tuberculosis”.

Since then, the academic meeting has been held biannually in spring and autumn. The Spring Academic Meeting has been held in Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Jeonju, Daejeon, Gangwondo, Gyeongju, and Jejudo in rotation as mainly symposium, where recent opinions about respiratory diseases have been introduced. Meanwhile, the Autumn Academic Meeting has been held in Seoul with mainly free paper and poster presentations. Since 1989, the presentation has been provided separately for tuberculosis and respiratory diseases thanks to the increase in the number of presentations including lung cancer, COPD, asthma, interstitial pneumonia, critical care medicine, tuberculosis and infection. And, the period of the academic meeting has been extended to one and a half day since the 81st Academic Meeting in the autumn of 1995, suggesting the progress in the field of respiratory diseases.

Furthermore, “The lecture on tuberculosis for primary physicians” has been held to provide information for primary physicians of public healthcare centers who directly deal with the patients with tuberculosis.
