The prevalence of tuberculosis is declining due to the improvement of national health status and the success of national tuberculosis eradication projects. Thus, one of the main objectives of the Academy is being met successfully. However, ongoing industrialization has led to a dramatic increase in respiratory diseases, and the situation calls for further research on respiratory diseases such as COPD and lung cancer as well as more anti-smoking campaigns. The Academy is firmly committed to such activities.

At the time, the Academy is also actively involved in the subspecialist training program implemented by the Korean Association of Internal Medicine. The program cultivates pulmonary subspecialist doing both clinical and basic research in the area of pulmonary diseases so as to contribute to the progress of respiratory medicine in Korea.
